Rookie Baseball

Boys ages 7&8 begin to compete at this level and play on a diamond with 60 foot bases and a pitching distance of 36 feet.  6 year olds are allowed to 'play up'.  Teams are balanced out based on players’ age.  Coaches pitch and outs are tracked, score is not.  A 5 run rule for each team per inning is in effect.  Players play with a safety ball that is the same size and weight as a hardball. Players are instructed during practices and prior to games about proper technique on throwing, approaching a ground ball, fly balls, hitting stance, and basic situational baseball. Coaches always emphasize the important life lessons of sportsmanship and teamwork. Players will rotate positions each inning and 9-10 players are assigned to positions on the field each inning.  We encourage everyone to play every inning so that no one is sitting on the bench. Teams use a continuous batting order and all players bat whether assigned to a field position or not.  Strikes are called, if a hitter swings three times and misses, then the hitter is out.   A batter is typically out after five pitches to keep play moving.  Games are 5 innings in length and there is a time limit to keep games about 90 minutes.  There are 10 to 12 scheduled games. There are no standings and the emphasis remains on building baseball knowledge and strong fundamentals, therefore there will be no end of season tournament at this level.  Each player gets a uniform shirt and a hat to keep.  Players are responsible to bring their own gloves helmet, bat and shoes.  Athletic cleats are not mandatory, but highly recommended.
